Low-Dose Naltrexone
What is low-dose naltrexone (LDN)?
Naltrexone is an oral medication typically dosed at 50 mg, traditionally intended for use in opioid and alcohol use disorders. Many recent studies focus on the off-label use of naltrexone in lower doses to treat types of pain conditions such as fibromyalgia, complex regional pain syndrome, and diabetic neuropathy. When taken in lower doses, naltrexone is processed differently through the nervous system and acts as a form of relief from inflammatory diseases. It has also been used to treat certain auto-immune conditions, such as Lyme Disease and irritable bowel syndrome.
Naltrexone studies demonstrate that LDN is usually well tolerated, with GI upset and sleep disturbances being the primary potential side effect that patient’s experience. Gradually titrating the dose from as low as 0.5mg up to a target dose of 4.5mg at bedtime, and taking with a small amount of food easily manages these side effects.
